The following narrative was prepared by Dolly Kuehn, STS Operations Supervisor, nominating Mike Micko, the ReDCo Group Vice President for Public Transportation, as a Pennsylvania Superstar of Transit 2008 at the PPTA annual conference held in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
We get to honor van drivers, bus drivers and mechanics. Today, STS gets to honor their commander and chief, Mike Micko.
I’m very grateful to have the privilege to honor Mike Micko as the Schuylkill Transportation System super star and to formally thank him; he has been a great blessing in my life.
Mike has worked for Schuylkill Transportation System since its inception in 1978, 30 years ago. He initially started for STS in the area of operations where he served as a scheduler and dispatcher. From the beginning Mike had an unwavering commitment and dedication to STS.
He worked to establish a good relationship with everyone including the maintenance workers and gained the additional knowledge necessary to know the type of vehicles in order to run a smooth transportation schedule on a daily basis and keep STS up-to date.
Mike didn’t stop, he pursued additional duties and found himself in the position of operations director where he has served for the past 26 years, doing an excellent job. Mike always has had a positive attitude that has helped STS through many challenges.
Mike was recently recognized at our 25th anniversary event last June by Senator James Rhoades for his many years of service at Schuylkill Transportation System; which you so deserved Mike.
As director of operations, he was able to enhance the services provided as well as extend the fleet, routes and ridership. "Mike, I remember those 6 Dodge vans we started out with."
Schuylkill Transportation System has come a long way, due to the visions and goals of Mike and John Sninsky. We at STS are thankful to have Mike’s leadership and commitment which is obvious to everyone working with him. He makes all of our jobs easier.
Mike your current position of vice president for public transportation services is well deserved, we at STS applaud you. Mike I admire and respect you more than you’ll ever know. This same respect comes from each of your peers and staff members. We think you, Mike, are outstanding. You still take the time to intermingle with the staff on a daily basis ensuring operations and maintenance are running smoothly.
Aside from serving and running STS, Mike’s interests include being an officer at his local gun club and the Polish-American Fire Company in Shenandoah.
Mike your strength and wisdom has always been there through the difficult times. Your compassion for others is outstanding.
What is most important to Mike? I know for a fact he keeps his family first in his life; his wife Maryann, daughter Amy, son-in-law Todd and that awesome beautiful grand-daughter of his, Delany Rose Rice.
How does Mike help us get thru the difficult times at STS? May I share one small example? After these 30 years STS is building a new transit center. Anyone who has built a transit center knows the degree of thought, time, and effort it takes. A question was addressed by Sam Detweiler, maintenance manager. It concerned the removal of snow at the new property. After looking and talking about this concern, Mike told Sam not to worry because he would put him in touch with Shenandoah’s borough manger, who has three great ladies who do an excellent job in snow removal for the Shenandoah Borough. I said, “Shenandoah”!!! After 30 years, I know only too well about their snow removal. Mike said, come on Dolly!! I asked Mike "who"? He said April, May, and June.
Mike, we at STS value your leadership, support, and friendship. It has greatly impacted STS. We at STS look forward to knowing that the best is yet to come.
You Mike Micko are not only the best choice for superstar of transit 2008 - Mike you will always be our personal superstar at STS.
Congratulations and thank you.
